Our Best Candidates Practice These 3 Habits
There’s a difference between good and exceptional when it comes to professionals – and it’s not just technical skills and titles. A strong track record will get you through the door, but there are nuances beyond your performance that will determine your career path.
Over the years of working with brilliant founders and standout candidates in hard tech startups, I’ve noticed a pattern:
The top 1% of professionals, whether they’re highly technical or seasoned executives, consistently display three behaviors that set them apart.
Check out these three career-shaping behaviors below.
______________________________________________________
1. They Network Before They “Need” To
The strongest candidates take calls, grab coffee, and build relationships before they’re in a job search.
I’m not suggesting grabbing coffee with everyone who asks. But I am saying that standout talent makes strategic relationships with people who will compliment their lives and careers. Synergistic relationships where value can be added both ways, ideally with fun.
They’re not transactional. The best of the best are connectors. This is especially true with top startup executives. They know the value of planting seeds, even when they’re not sure what they’ll grow into. You have to think of your networking ROI as a long term game, and even better, find ways to actually add value to others. If you’re not always looking for a quick win or an immediate return, you are putting yourself in a stronger position in the long run.
I’ve seen this open doors in unexpected ways. A casual connection can turn into a co-founder, a board member, or an investor. But if you wait to start networking until you’re actively looking, or when you need something, you’re putting yourself at a disadvantage.
Build high value relationships when you’re steady, not just when you’re seeking something.

2. They Lead With Connection
Connecting authentically is powerful. People are more likely to advocate for you, remember you, and want to work with you when they feel a genuine connection. A little heart goes a long way. This might surprise you – but I’ve seen the most successful candidates send warm, thoughtful thank-you messages after interviews or meetings, or ask genuinely about life’s circumstances. Realizing that we are all complete humans and finding a way to connect on more than one dimension sets you ahead. I’m not talking about the old school “thanks for your time” message. I’m talking about a personalized note that includes a callback to something real: a photo from a trip discussed, a shared article, or a follow-up on something someone said.
It’s not always about being polished. It’s about being human.

3. They’re Clear on Who They Are and What They Want
When you know where you’re going, it’s easier to say no to the wrong things, and yes to the right ones.
The best candidates I work with have taken the time to reflect on their goals. They’re not sending mixed messages or driven by a fear of missing out. They show up with clarity and confidence.
And here’s the magic: when you are clear, others are clear on how to support you. You become memorable. You become referable.
It is also common to speak with professionals who say “I’m great at a lot of things, I can do a lot of things”. While this multitool approach may seem like you’re widening your net of opportunities, I argue it is limiting them. By knowing what is an excellent fit for you, you are allowing for the most aligned matches.

These three behaviors may seem small, but I see them move mountains every week. They’re simple, but wildly effective.
By building relationships before you need them, showing up with genuine warmth, and getting clear on what you’re really looking for, you create the kind of professional gravity that draws the right people and opportunities your way.
Regardless of whether you’re a seasoned executive or an up and coming professional… engraining these behaviors into how you operate will reap benefits throughout your career and your life.
